Multi-Mania 2006 was COOL !

It was the 5th Multi-Mania we organised with our Technical University West-Flanders, department PIH and I have to say it was really really cool ! Today is the first day that I just feel like “recovered” after several extremely busy weeks with more or less no sleep ! With my collegue Klaus I was responsable for the main conference hall so I only saw following sessions.
Serge <gadget man> Jespers started with a really cool session about Flash beyond the browser. The “I will try not to set the place on fire” experiment was really awesome. Then Aral Balkan started his session. He talked about the architecture of the View in Flash applications, the importance of encapsulation, and muse on inheritance and composition. He normally wanted to talk about the ActionScript 3 version of Arp but there were some technical problems with the projection (next year we bring our own projector Aral or maybe you could buy a MAC 😉 ) But the peoples liked it after all and my collegue Ronald did a wonderfull job by arranging another room for Aral so he could do his ARP session later on the day. It actually was the first time peoples could see the ARP 3 preview release (which he made in the hotel the night before !!).
After that Wayne Smith (Senior Product Manager for Microsoft Expression Web Designer) talked about the Microsoft Expression products (Graphic Designer, Interactive Designer and Web Designer). It was interesting to see how Microsoft is also working on cool design tools and how they can be integrated in your existing workflow.
After that it was time for the panel discussions, actually something new we tried in Belgium. The first panel was on OS Flash and was moderated by Aral Balkan. In the panel we had Serge Jespers (pronounced like “Sergio” by Aral), Peter Elst, Edwin Van Rijkom and Christophe Herreman. Serge played the “bad guy” and he did it wonderfull !
The next panel was on Interactive communication. It was moderated by Christel Demayer and felt like a real living room session which was really cool. It was very relaxed and cool to have several big multimedia players on the Belgian market all together on 5 bouncing balls :-).
After that we had a meal with the speakers in some really cool venue “wok away”. The food was really good but I had to leave before the desert because we had to arrange several things for the big student awardshow later on.
At 8.00 o clock in the evening the big awardshow started with a really awesome 3D intro made by two of our students. Some airplane dropped a boat in the sea and then the boat started to find his way to the secret awardroom deep under the sea. Ones arrived there , the show could start ! During the show Remon Tijssen from fluid gave a showcase about his work untill now. There were some several inspirational experiments to look at. You can see many of the experiments on his site so make sure to have a look at http://www.fluid.nl .You can also look at the nominees and winners of the awardshow on www.multi-mania.be .
After that everyone had a drink on the bar and the party started ! As a good tradition everybody enjoyed the Belgian beer (especially the Duvel beer I guess 🙂 ) ! And offcourse our final year students started networking and searching for some job opportunities at the multimedia firms that were present !
There was also some after party at “den brass” where meters of Belgian beer where present 🙂 and offourse again Duvel ! Aral, Edwin, David and Remon will remember the party for a long time I am sure ;-).
I really enjoyed Multi-Mania 2006 and I am really looking forward to “Multi-Mania 2007″ !! Hope to see you all again at Multi-Mania 2007 or hopefully earlier (Flash on the beach, Aral ?)
